Industry News » Chevron Phillips Chemical Plans New Propylene Unit in Texas

Chevron Phillips Chemical has announced that it will expand upon its propylene business in the Gulf Coast with the addition of a new C3 splitter unit.  This new unit will be located in Baytown, Texas at the company’s existing Cedar Bayou complex.

This C3 splitter unit will have an anticipated capacity of 500,000 tons per year upon its startup in 2023. Chevron Phillips Chemical also announced that S&B Engineers and Constructors of Texas has been chosen to engineer, procure and construct the project, with construction expected to begin in January 2022.

This splitter unit will be able to convert refinery grade propylene and propane into higher purity propylene products, which is intended for several household and industrial applications such as polypropylene, acrylonitrile and propylene oxide. Chevron Phillips Chemical already operates C3 splitter units at Cedar Bayou, Port Arthur, Sweeney, Clemens, and Old Ocean plants in Texas as the company hopes to continue to expand to meet the growing global propylene demand.
